Beverly restaurant owner remembered

 Over the weekend, the City of Beverly and the downtown business community lost a very special person.Deborah “Deb” Moody, owner of Cityside Diner on Cabot Street, passed away unexpectedly on Saturday.When weekend regulars showed up to the restaurant Sunday morning for breakfast, they found the doors locked and a very sad note hanging in the window. The message stated that Moody had passed away, that the funeral arrangements were pending and the family would be meeting with staff members Monday morning.Sidewalk chalk had been left in front of the restaurant and, throughout Sunday afternoon and into the early part of the week, the walkway in front of the eatery slowly filled with colorful chalk condolences.Flowers, candles and other mementos were placed along front of the building. A paper banner with the words “WE LOVE DEB” at the top had also been hung on the side of the eatery. It quickly filled with messages from those who knew and loved Moody.“Words cannot express this loss,” wrote friend and fellow Beverly business owner Jackie Moldau. “Thanks for being you.”Folks also shared their grief and condolences on Facebook.“She was a wonderful woman with a great heart and beautiful spirit,” Lisa Fitzgerald wrote.Cindy Modugno, who shared information regarding Friday’s memorial service on social media, praised Moody.“Deb was the most generous person,” she wrote. “Her friends, staff and customers always came before herself.”Jim Dunn shared that he and Moody had spent many hours walking their dogs together and talking.“She was one of a kind and I will miss her dearly,” he posted on Facebook.Moody touched the lives of many, even those she barely knew.“I only met her once, but she left such a positive impression,” Karen Wurst shared on Facebook. “Such a big heart.”Andrew Whitelocks pointed out that when such a prominent community member passes away, everyone is affected.“I never got the chance to know her, but the outpouring of support shows how much she was appreciated by everyone, and her family sho... Campbell, 69, passed away at 7:35 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 8, 2017, in Shawnee Christian Nursing Center in Herrin.Danny was born Aug. 19, 1947, in West Frankfort, to Vernon and Nellie (King) Campbell.He married Doyce Ray on Nov. 17, 1972, in Johnston City.She preceded him in death on Oct. 26, 2014.Danny was a pastor with the Church of God in Johnston City for several years.He had previously served as a police officer for Johnston City before entering the ministry. He was a 1966 graduate of Johnston City High School.He served his country honorably in the U.S. Air Force during the Vietnam era.Survivors include two children, Mark Campbell of Johnston City, and Kelly Williams of Carterville; two grandchildren, Dylan and Peyton Campbell; sister, Brenda Horn of Johnston City; brother, Vernon (Carla) Campbell of Johnston City; two brothers-in-law, Terry Ray of Perryville, Maryland, and John (Debbie) Ray of Johnston City. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews.In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by his parents. Services will be at 1 p.m. Friday, Aug. 11, in Pyle Funeral Home in Johnston City, with Pastor Jimmy Russell officiating. Interment will follow in Lakeview Cemetery in Johnston City. Military Rites will be accorded by the Marion VFW and American Legion Post along with the Air Force Military Honors Team.Visitation will be 5 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.Pyle Funeral Home in Johnston City is entrusted with the arrangements.Memorial contributions may be made to Danny’s family.
